Paper bags or plastic bags: which one is better to choose?
It's an age old question, when it comes time to check out when grocery shopping: paper bag or plastic bag to choose? It seems like it should be an easy choice, but there's an incredible number of details and inputs hidden in each bag. From the point of durability and reusability to life cycle costs, there's a lot more to each bag than meet the eye. Let's have a look behind the bags.
As you wrap up your weekly grocery shopping, the cashier mechanically spouts at you, "Paper bag or plastic bag?" referring to what kind of bag you'd prefer. For some people, it's a stressful decision to use paper bag or plastic bag. Convenience is pulling you toward plastic bag, but a nagging green conscience might automatically pull you toward paper bag. However, it's raining, and if your paper bags break, it could ruin your purchases. On the other hand, is it selfish to put immediate convenience over the thousands of years it might take for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill? But, what a minute -- aren't we encouraged to save the trees and avoid overusing paper?
